The Red Ballon : What weights you down?
I'm embarking on a project centered around Borderline Personality Disorder, with two distinct approaches to convey this concept. The first part involves organizing an exhibition featuring a combination of 2D and 3D artworks. These pieces will depict the reactions and experiences related to this disorder, drawing from my own personal encounters.
The second aspect of the project involves creating plaster body parts with cuts, such as hands, legs, and faces, which will be strategically placed in bustling areas around Manhattan. Each of these sculptures will be adorned with 3-5 red balloons, accompanied by markers, inviting passersby to share their greatest anxieties by writing on the balloons. This interactive monument will be displayed in public for a span of 2-3 hours before being collected. The collected responses will serve as the basis for a survey, culminating in the creation of a video that documents the entire process, including interviews with those who contributed their thoughts on the balloons. The video will be shared on various social media platforms, and I will also release the balloons into the sky, symbolizing the act of releasing inner pressures.
This project holds profound personal significance. New York City, as a diverse and bustling metropolis, brings together people from various backgrounds and cultures. However, this amalgamation can lead to a sense of not belonging for many individuals. I can personally relate to this, having struggled with social anxiety in my early years and later contending with Borderline Personality Disorder during my teenage years, which manifested as self-harming behavior. I found solace in art as a means of expressing my emotions, and I aim to guide others, especially those in vast urban environments where self-worth may be challenged, out of the depths of depression.
My artistic approach for this project will be surrealistic in style, aiming to tap into the unconscious and dreamlike aspects of the human psyche while simultaneously providing a path toward healing and self-discovery.
